The road to Mount Mitchell State Park was closed due to recent precipitation and cold air, but happily we were already planning to hike up from the bottom. A real hike to a high point this time! We haven't had one of those since Katahdin last August. We started at Black Mountain campground and climbed trail #190 to the top. There was ice on parts of the upper trail, nothing the micro-spikes couldn't handle. We had the top to ourselves and greatly enjoyed the panoramic view from the platform.
