Hawaii - the Big Island (part 2)

Sulfur vents at Hawaii Volcanos National Park

How do plants grow in a lava field?

The sea arch below the park

Roads here are more temporary than most

As are signs

My favorite type of lava formation

Pictographs

Our greeter at the bird sanctuary

Kilauea Iki crater

Walking in the rain forest

At a lava tube entrance

Either black sand or coffee grounds...

We're a happy group at the bakery

Big waves at South Point

Flying a kite - lots of wind!

Green Sand Beach

Well, greener than any other sand we've seen before, in any case

Mom and I took a bird watching tour and saw some i'iwi's and other amazing birds

I had an easier time taking photos of bird watchers instead of the birds themselves!

A royal heiau in Kona

Makalawena Beach - worth the hike!

It's a honu world

Ancient totems at Pu'uhonua O Honaunau (Place of Refuge) National Historical Park

Rare Hawaiian simian

How did this get here?

Waimea sculpture

Finally, a glimpse of the Hawaiian nene geese! We searched all over the island and finally found them on a green at the Big Island Country Club

Above Waipi'o Valley

We went on an adventure hike into this valley

It was difficult to get a good shot of these really-high walls

But it was easy to take a bath

Waipi'o Valley from the other side

Akaka Falls north of Hilo

Three weeks together and we're still on good terms - a successful trip!

Thank you to Carmen and her family for their Big Island Hospitality!
