OBJECTIVE:
To obtain the position of Software Engineer, developing client/server Java applets/applications. Willing to travel.

PROGRAMMING EXPERIENCE:
I have been programming Java professionally since April of 1998. I have been a project lead, and I have extensive development experience with the following technologies:

  • Complex GUI building with Swing and custom components
  • Java applets and applications, client/server communication
  • Packaging applications with InstallShield Professional 7

NOTABLE PROJECTS:
GUI Development:
Built over 100 GUIs from scratch with Java Swing or HTML and JavaScript. Created custom Java components and renderers with custom painting routines to achieve a variety of different visual styles and effects.

Statistics Gathering Server:
Developed a server application that collects information on how often our applications are used. When a user launches any of our demonstrations, the client code silently reports back information such as the operating system, time zone, and country. The server compiles the data and displays it through several customized reports, for example showing how many people in each country used a specific demo in a given month.

Planet Tivoli Kiosk:
Developed a kiosk that was deployed for use by attendees of the Planet Tivoli conferences. The application displayed all the conference sessions, and allowed the user to customize their schedule of sessions (sessions and schedules were stored in a database). Schedules could then be printed or synchronized to the user's PDA calendar. The kiosk also provided an integrated web browser, as well as a custom email application. (This was prior to the era where laptops were commonplace and there were free web email solutions.)

Web Crawler:
Developed a tool that reverse engineers web sites. From a starting URL it automatically fetches and builds a local copy of the web site, along with all the supporting files. The tool is used by our team to assist in building demonstrations of various IBM products.

WORK HISTORY:
Java Software Engineer at IBM Tivoli Systems, Inc.
Sep 28, 1998 - Aug 6, 2008
Designed demonstrations that emulate IBM Tivoli's product line. These applications are used by the Tivoli sales force to showcase the capabilities of our software to potential customers. The demonstrations are vital sales tools as they're more reliable and have a smaller footprint than the enterprise software that they model, and they can simulate various complex network issues that Tivoli software is designed to manage.

Java Software Engineer at Inter-National Research Institute, Inc.
Apr 27, 1998 - Sep 25, 1998
Designed and programmed web-based Java client/server applications. Fulfilled various software engineering contracts, primarily for the U.S. Department of Defense.

PC Support Technician at Sematech
May 25, 1995 - Apr 24, 1998
Installed and networked new computer systems. Repaired PC hardware and software problems, including peripherals such as printers, video cards, and storage devices.

Computer Maintenance Technician in the United States Air Force
July 23, 1990 - July 22, 1994
Served at Shaw AFB, SC, for over three years, maintaining a variety of computer systems. Deployed to various locations, including Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Southern Watch.

EDUCATION:
University of Texas at Austin
Fall 1994 - Aug 15, 1998
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.
